When might coaching be necessary?
Coaching for executives would be
considered effective in a wide variety of scenarios. The following are some examples:
- Creating a work and home life balance
- Developing
'people and communication skills' for managers who may have been appointed based mainly on
their subject knowledge
- Helping individuals who may be suffering from
stress and/or low self esteem
- Working with employees who may be causing
conflict in the workplace and assist in conflict resolution
- Helping 'high
potential' employees to develop more leadership skills for the next level
- Alleviating fears such as a fear of public speaking, presentations or maybe fear of
failure
- Fostering a ?team? spirit
- Helping a manager to
adapt to the challenges of a promotion or new role
What
makes The Mind Works coaching so effective?
The profession of
coaching has enjoyed enormous growth in the past several years for one simple reason - it
works! For this to happen it clearly helps to have a coach who is experienced, trained and
understands the environments that they are called to work in. It also helps when the client,
is open to changing old behaviours and is committed to the coaching programme. Beyond that,
there are a number of reasons why the process is very effective.
Firstly it is
assumed that people are aware at some level (often subconsciously) of the factors that might
be holding them back from success or happiness. The coach's job is to use powerful
questions to bring this information into conscious awareness. It is often the case that
clients may have 'avoided' addressing these issues for a very long time. By bringing them
to awareness they are then in a position to get more control over their unwanted behaviours.
This is also re-enforced with the technique of hypnosis, where making the right suggestions
to the subconscious begins to make the appropriate changes within the client(s).
And Secondly, there is the important aspect of accountability when working with
someone else. Often a client will agree to try out something new or complete some
outstanding task before the next session. By undertaking this commitment, the idea is more
likely to be actioned. It is the action steps that guarantee changes and therefore results.
Thirdly, the coaching process is 'forward looking'. Some discussion time is
given to the past where appropriate, but the bias of the conversation is toward the present
and the future i.e. what is happening now and what needs to happen next in order to get from
A to B in the most direct route. Coaching is solution focused, moving away from the problem
and looking at the solution.
